Sound Bytes!
If you click the above link, you'll be directed to an audio introduction recorded by me! I recommend listening, just so you catch the gist of what this thread is all about.
If you don't want to listen, or you can't, here's everything that's said in text form:
- Spoiler:
- Hey, guys, this is Weiss.
You know, recently I realized that we have a lot of musical talent around on FOG.
While we have threads and forums dedicated to graphic arts and writing, there’s nothing for the musicians.
So, to give them a place to post their work, be it singing, spoken poetry, playing instruments or any other kind of audio style, I decided to create this thread.
If you want to post up a sound clip, but you’re not sure how, I’ll be providing instructions on how to create and use a zShare account in another audio clip following this one.
Just in case, I’ll also type up the instructions in text for those who need to go back and review, or just want to read instead of listening to the instructions and following along.
If you want to post up YouTube videos or audio clips that are hosted somewhere else, feel free, as long as they belong in this thread!
I just wanted to make sure everyone had a way to share their stuff, and zShare is a free and easy file hosting service with a gigabyte of storage for each member.
If you can figure things out on your own, then I encourage you to jump right in and have some fun! If you need some help figuring out how to set up your account and download files, open the next sound clip or read below and I’ll get you started.
The sound clip with instructions on using zShare and linking the files in your post can be found here: Instructions
Note: In the sound clip, I say to use "backslash" when typing the URL. As everyone should know, they are actually forward slashes. I apologize for the mistake.
Once again, for those who don't want to or can't listen, or for those who need to review and don't want to listen through my boring explanation again, here's everything I said in text format:
- Spoiler:
- Alright, so you want to post a sound clip, but you’re not sure how this zShare thing works.
Or maybe you’ve got that all figured out and you just need to know how to link the file in your post.
Well, I’m going to give you step by step instructions on how to do all of that from start to finish so you can begin sharing your creativity – in audio.
First, you’re going to need to go to zShare’s website.
The URL can be found in the Sound Bytes opening post, but if you don’t feel like going back to check, here it is: http://www.zshare.net.
Yup, that’s it.
Once you’ve reached the site, you’ll need to make an account.
A free account has one gigabyte of storage, which should be more than enough to keep you going.
So, using the zShare navigation bar at the top of their page, click “Create Free Account” to bring up the registration page.
This next part is pretty straight-forward. Fill in each field with your information.
If you don’t want to give out your personal info, just make something up for everything except your e-mail address.
Oh, and you’ll want to choose a username and password you can remember, so don’t wing that part, either.
After submitting your information, you’ll get a page telling you to confirm your e-mail.
Navigate your way to your e-mail inbox and find the new message from zShare.
It should arrive pretty quickly, so if you don’t see it, be sure to check your Junk bin just in case.
Just open up the e-mail and you’ll see a link that you can click to confirm your e-mail address.
If you’re using an e-mail service that doesn’t support HTML, it’ll probably appear as just a URL.
Copy and paste it into your browser and it’ll work just fine.
Clicking the link should navigate you back to zShare.
If not, just return to the URL from before and click to LOGON on the navigation bar.
If you used the e-mail link, you should be automatically taken to the LOGIN page.
Enter your username and password and click to LOGIN.
This takes care of the hard part.
When you log in, you’ll have the usual navigation bar near the top of the screen, except the options will be a little different.
From here, you can do things like editing your profile and other trivial stuff, but I’m going to skip straight to the uploading.
To upload a file, click the “Upload Now” button all the way to the left on the navigation bar.
Doing that will bring you to a page where you can browse your files for the clip you want to upload.
Click the “Browse…” button and then navigate your way to the file you want to upload.
Click the target file, followed by the “Open” button in your dialog box.
The File field should now be filled out with the target file’s location on your PC.
If you want to add a description, feel free, but it’s not really necessary.
Be sure that “Share with a friend slash colleague” is selected, since making it private will probably create problems when you try to share the file.
Next, click the check box to agree to the Terms of Service and then click the “Share It!” button to start your upload.
Depending on the length of your file, the upload could take a little bit, but it’s usually pretty quick.
Once it finishes, you’ll be at a new page listing the various URLs that you can copy and paste to either link directly to your file or to create a titled link on the forums.
If you want, you can copy the “Forums” link and post that straight into a reply for Sound Bytes – no more work needed.
Alternatively, you can click the “My Files” button on your zShare navigation bar to reach a listing of the files currently on your account.
To listen to your own file, just click the linked name all the way on the left.
Under the Description field, you’ll find other options that will let you edit the details of your file, share it, send it, or delete it from your account.
You can also keep track of how many views your file has received using the counter all the way to the right.
If you didn’t get the link to your file earlier, just click on the “Share” option.
A box will drop down with a link for both downloading the file and sharing it on the forums.
Just copy the link for the forums and you can post it into a reply, just like before.
All done!
If you encounter any problems, be sure to let me know and I’ll try to help you out!
Other than that, I encourage you to jump in and have fun.
Remember, any type of audio art can be posted in the thread, from music to poetry.
Don’t be shy, and try to have some fun with it!
If this becomes popular enough, I might even add a Sound Byte of the Month to the Monthly Features from now on!
For now, I look forward to hearing all of you guys’ awesome music and poetry and I hope you guys make this into a really popular thread.
So, enjoy!
You guys can also expect to hear some Sound Bytes from me in the near future, so maybe that's something to look forward to, as well.

Impressive! Very good introduction, too, Weiss. You seem to have the perfect voice for instructional explanations. ^^
I might be interested in getting into this, a little. What do I need? A mic? Maybe some sound-editing software?

It says I need to download the plug-in, but when I try to download it, my computer says "No suitable plug-ins were found".

Re: Sound Bytes!
Well, sound-editing software isn't really necessary, Kalon, unless you want to play around with the things you record. It's up to the individual if they just post something raw or if they mess around with it. There's a free program called Audacity that you can download for basic recording and editing, which is what I used for my recordings.
Hermes, I'm not sure what kind of plug-in you would need to download, since I received no such message, but I'd suggest making sure you have Java and Adobe Flash updated. Those seem to be the most frequently used plug-ins, so perhaps that's the problem.
When/where is it giving you the message that you need to download a plug-in?

Firefox says that I need to download a plug-in right when I open the page. It says, "Additional plug-ins required to view the media on this page". When I click to install the plug-ins, it says none are found.

Which page? The ones with my recordings, the one to upload a file?
If it's the former, it's probably either the Flash or Java updates, since one of them is probably required to play the embedded video files.

Re: Sound Bytes!
Since FOG FM is suspended (oh fuck! a leak!), I'll try and keep my vocal cords warmed up and see what I can do to participate in this.
Everyone here should know my voice by now (if you don't then shame on you for not tuning in to your own radio show!), so it shouldn't be a surprise. Though I'll try and be as 'out-of-the-box' as I can to make myself entertaining to listen to.

Meh, I give up. It's pretty embarrassing if I'm the only one with anything up, so I officially pronounce this a dead and failed project.

We can open it up again when we have more interest, I suppose. Maybe if I ever get a mic, I'll be able to participate. Maybe do some readings. Maybe read some role-plays. ....ooooh....! wow that'd be cool.......
Does talking into a headphone really work? How would you test it?

Re: Sound Bytes!
I could read some of my poetry, but I first need to bring through my barrier of self-hatred of my voice. And the insecurity issue of it...
Tried to record some bass playing but it didn't work, settings with the mic and such. Not my computer though, so I never mess with these things. In time I might put something up though.
And that would be cool, Kalon.

Re: Sound Bytes!
Sorry, Ryona. I guess I just thought the idea would generate more interest, since it seemed like there were numerous musically inclined people roaming about. With my being the only one with anything posted in this thread, it started to look like some kind of personal topic for me to embarrass myself with my sub-par singing.
At the very least, I figured I'd unpin it and just let it fall into the depths of the dead topics, since no one was even posting in here anymore. Like Kalon said, we can always reopen (or rather, re-pin and re-invest into) the topic if we generate some interest from other users.
Kalon, it's possible to use speakers as a receiver, but the quality of sound produced would probably be pretty horrible. Furthermore, I've only heard of this being done, so I can't even claim with absolute certainty that it does work. Using a microphone would, of course, be the more reliable option.
The idea of doing a roleplay through recording also sounds interesting, though I can see people not enjoying it much because of the time it would take to listen and the effort to record replies. Although, making recordings of, say, things that you've written; that might not be so bad. It would be like the audio books they make for people who have difficulty reading, or who simply don't want to read and would prefer to have the story told to them instead.
Mel has a valid excuse, unfortunately. Having landline internet doesn't lend itself well to anything - much less uploading sound clips. Plus, without a computer of his own, it's hard to make adjustments to things that aren't working properly. Sad, since you, Mel, are one of the ones I thought would benefit from this thread the most.
Alas, we'll see how it goes. If a couple more people express interest and start posting things up, I'll likely repost mine. It's a lot less embarrassing when: a) you're not the only one making a fool of yourself, b) there's something else to distract people from whether or not you did well. In my case, the concern is the latter.

Re: Sound Bytes!
That's what I was saying: reading role-plays that are already written. Many of them get pretty long! xD And it would probably be a great incentive to finish them! It'll probably feel like getting published. ^^
*squeees inside*
This idea is getting better and better the more I think about it. xD You're right; it'd be just like audio books! ^^
Now I just need a mic....
I can probably get one easy as winking from some computer store, right?

Re: Sound Bytes!
Indeed. A lot of webcams have microphones in them, as well, so you could kill two birds with one stone if you so desired. A webcam with a mic would only run about $20 for something fairly cheap, but still decent. The same price could net you a decent headset, which would be a pair of headphones with a microphone attached.
Headsets tend to be more practical for recording, since it ups the clarity by reducing outside noises. It also reduces feedback from your speakers when the sound is channeled through headphones.

Re: Sound Bytes!
I just had a brilliant idea! What if we got a ban of peeps together and made audio versions of some roleplays here? Like audio books, but instead they're "audio roleplays". We can post them and offer users a chance to sit back and listen to them, rather than sit and stare at a screen forever to enjoy it.
Of course, the roleplays are better off read aloud when they have a lot of posts in them, or are finished. Its more the interested reader, than the person wanting to participate in the roleplay.

That's a good idea, too! xD
A band of people together, reading with feeling the posts they've written in their role-play. xD
I guess we'd have to finish one first, or come along way. Maybe a project like this might actually aid in a role-plays completion!

I get the same message Hermes does so I can't seem to play embedded zShare files. Manually downloading the file's an alternative though~
Gunneh: I was only able to listen to Part One since wma files are somewhat huge. Took my slow connection 7 minutes to download. I chuckled at "It's damn entertaining for me to read and it's going to be damn entertaining for you to listen... ... ... to." > u <

Re: Sound Bytes!
This is my duet with Attie. The song is "My Eyes" from the Dr. Horrible Sing-Along Blog soundtrack! The music was taken from a YouTube video, but it was a remastery from the original using a sound editing program, so even if I knew where the video was so I could credit it, it would be a mis-credit to say that they were the ones who created the music. So!

That was very nice, Hermes! I had to turn up my volume to hear your voice, though. I'm not sure if it was the file or my computer. *shrug* I always did like that poem, too! xD
And great duet, Weiss and Attie!! How did you manage it, being in two different states? Did you have to kinda combine the files into one? It sounded very good! ^^

It's my mic. I tried to get it as loud as I could. I might download Audacity and see if I can get that to work for me.

Sorry, I completely forgot to respond to this. Yes, Attie and I each sang our respective parts and then I synced them together as best I could without ruining the sound quality. Granted, I still did a fairly poor job of it, but I'm at least moderately happy with the end result.
Glad it was enjoyed.
And yes, as I've already stated in the IRC, Hermes' reading was lovely, due greatly to the fact that she has a lovely voice. A bit shy and withheld, but pleasant all the same.

Re: Sound Bytes!
Not bad, Hermes, not bad!
You did a great job staving of the monotone that too often creeps up on people who read aloud.
I really want to do this myself now! xD I found a mic, sort of. Now I just need to find something to read.

Ryona: What I did (with a laptop) is go to the (if you have Microsoft Windows, and not a Mac) Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Sound Recorder (That came WITH the laptop).
With that, I was able to record myself fine. Granted, I don't have a headset and just the laptop mic, so Weiss had to edit some of my static out, but... That's all it took for me. Do you have something similar?
